Bone Grafting

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone structure starts to break down. Over time, this can make other teeth shift out of place. Bone grafting is a dental surgery procedure that rebuilds the jawbone structure when a tooth is lost. During a bone grafting surgery, the dentist will insert bone tissue into the jawbone. Over time, the bone will fuse to the jawbone.

Explain Bone Grafting

When a tooth or multiple teeth have been compromised, the structural integrity of the tooth can be restored with bone grafting and dental implants. Bone grafting involves adding bone to the jaw and implant area to restore full function and aesthetics to the mouth. This procedure is most commonly performed in patients who have suffered trauma resulting in tooth loss, but it can also be beneficial to restore the aesthetics of a smile.

Bone Grafting Procedure and Aftercare

The dentist in Portland, OR, will numb the area before removing any unhealthy bone or tissue. Then, they will take a small bit of healthy bone from elsewhere in your mouth and place it in the hole left behind. The bone tissue will need to heal and fuse with the jawbone before implants can be placed. This can take three to six months to complete.

Once the graft is in place, the patient can begin the process of receiving dental implants. Dental implants are titanium posts inserted into the structure of the jawbone to replace the root of the missing tooth. They act as artificial tooth roots and provide stability for a crown to be placed over them. Together, the combination of a dental implant and a dental crown can provide both functional restorations for the missing tooth as well as a full smile that is aesthetically pleasing.

This procedure may be done several times in the same area if additional bone needs to be grafted into the jaw. It may be necessary when a patient has suffered extensive bone loss due to gum disease or other conditions. It is also often performed on patients who have worn dentures for a long time since the jawbone may deteriorate over time without the presence of natural teeth.

Patients should maintain excellent oral hygiene habits throughout their treatment to avoid further damage to the gums and teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss at least twice a day to remove plaque from the teeth and along the gum line. Gently brush your tongue as well, as bacteria can collect there and cause bad breath and other problems.
